Sometimes you just need to get out of the house, relive some memories, and enjoy a great show.
That’s what happened last night. My friend Dan invited my wife Denise and me to Weezer’s record release show at the Troubadour where they played tracks from the new White Album and many of their classic hits. The energy in that room emanating from the band’s diehard fans was infectious!
They say that music is the soundtrack of our lives and when I was standing there watching Weezer belt out hit after hit, each song took me to a different place in my life. “Buddy Holly” made me think of the first time I saw that Happy Days video and “Say It Ain’t So” reminded me of the first time I saw Weezer at a tiny club on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, CA. I was so young then. I was still forging my way in the music business, and here were these nerdy looking guys who were basically the same age as me forging their own way in the music business.
Every song they played from Pinkerton reminded me of how their sophomore album, while a classic, sort of bombed and how Rivers went back to college. I too had thought about going back to college, but I never did.
Rivers managed to dip out of the spotlight for a few years and then came back as strong as ever with the Green Album. I had started my company Fanscape by that point and Weezer was one of our biggest clients. What a thrill to work on that album!
Here’s the lesson that I’ve learned over and over again these past few years. Yes, after a long day of work, it’s easier to stay home, watch Netflix, and eat ice cream. But if you get yourself out of the house, see some live music, and let the songs take you to another place and time, it will remind you why it is good to be alive!
